A great smile is not only pleasing to look at; it is also an indication of good general dental health. Not all of us are blessed with a great smile- we have to work a little harder. For a long time, cosmetic dentistry was only for the rich and famous; it used to cost a lot of money. With the advances of cosmetic dentistry over the last decade and a half, prices have dropped substantially. With the development of new techniques and materials, cosmetic dentistry is now accessible and affordable.

There are many different approaches to cosmetic dentistry available, ranging greatly in price. Read on to learn a bit more about three of the most popular procedures.

Teeth Whitening

One of the most common cosmetic complaints is discoloured teeth. There are a number of reasons for discoloured teeth. It could be something that you regularly drink (tea or coffee), or it could be the result of an underlying medical condition. It could even be from medication that you have recently taken.

Teeth whitening is usually done in-house by the dentist. There are many over-the-counter whitening treatments available, but it makes more sense to leave this treatment to the professionals. Incorrectly applied whitening could result in blotchy, white-and-yellow teeth. The professional treatment is inexpensive and usually takes about an hour.

Veneers

Quite often it’s not the straightness of the teeth that’s at issue, but the condition. Teeth might be chipped or cracked, you might have unsightly gaps between your teeth or your teeth might be badly discoloured. Porcelain veneers might very well be your answer. Veneers are extremely thin layers of porcelain that are bonded to your original tooth.

They can change the colour, shape and size of your teeth and don’t require extensive reshaping of the original tooth. Veneers are custom made to fit each individual client. Veneers feel like real tooth enamel and are easier to clean as they are stain resistant.

Orthodontics

Another very common complaint is crooked teeth. Orthodontic devises of various descriptions are used to straighten crooked teeth. Traditionally metal braces were used, especially with children, to straighten teeth at an early age. Nowadays, however, there are many more options available.

A whole range of clear (made out of plastic), or invisible braces (attached to the back of your teeth) are available. There are also clear braces systems, such as Invisalign, that are virtually invisible. A succession of these clear braces is placed over your teeth, at successive intervals, to gently pull them into alignment. By using this system, even adults have noticed a marked improvement.

If you didn’t get orthodontic treatment as a child, don’t despair, as an adult you can still have your teeth straightened.
